2006 National Training Seminar (NTS)

The 2006 National Training Seminar was held in commemoration of Iha Sensei 30th anniversary in Lansing, Michigan.  For this special event demonstrations were performed at the Wharton Center on the campus of Michigan State University by most of the Shidokan Dojos attending the event.  The demonstration team of Mason Senak, Matthew Senak, Andre Cabaero and Michael Carleo produced a performance that was extremely well received.

Some of our younger students acquitted themselves quite nicely in their first appearance at the Shidokan National Kata Tournament.  Deepak Seshadri won first place in his division.  Ivan Golub won second place in his division.  Tyler Young won 3rd place, Matthew Carleo won 3rd place, and Julie Seshadri and Arianna Young both performed well in their first attempt.

This was an extremely hard working and sincere group of black belt testing candidates.  They all performed at their best under pressure and we were extremely proud of their results.  Here is a list of the candidates and their new ranks:

As always, we enjoyed our visit to Lansing.  We were especially impressed with the friendliness shown to us by the foreign visitors.  We feel that we developed a much closer relationship with them.  The next time we see them we will already be friends.  It was wonderful to see the people we already knew from the Lansing area and our friendship only deepened.  We look forward to seeing them all again next year.

2005 National Training Seminar (NTS)

The 2005 National Training Seminar was one of our best attended events of the year.  It was a great pleasure to introduce new people to the experience of the National Training Seminar.  Our dojo was entrusted with additional responsibilities, as we were asked to help prepare the children's demonstration for the Sunday awards banquet.  We were very proud of the results of our hard work and the demonstration was very well received.

We also had a great time at the Kata Tournament.  Everyone advanced several rounds and were extremely competitive.  Ivan Golub won first place in the Pinan Shodan competition.  Michael and Matthew Carleo finished 2nd and 3rd after Daniel McCloud in the Itosu Passai competition.

We were extremely proud of the performances of our testing candidates.  The results of their hard work was evident in their performances.

These are the names and ranks of our successful candidates:

Again, we would like to express, to everyone we met, our thanks for making us feel at home each time we visit.  We are all looking forward to next year's event.

2004 National Training Seminar (NTS)

Our first year as a Shibu Dojo came to an inspiring and eventful end with our attendance of the 2004 National Training Seminar.  Several important events took place.  Our first group of Shodans to test as representatives of our new status as a Shibu Dojo successfully passed their examinations and achieved the rank of Shodan.  In addition, another student successfully tested for Sandan.

These are the names and ranks of our successful candidates:

Candidate

Rank

Arlene Gleeson Shodan
Casey Gleeson Shodan
Matthew Pecoraro Shodan
Kevin Donnelly Shodan
Andre Cabaero Sandan

We were also very proud of the results achieved by our competitors in the Kata Tournaments.  In the Itosu Passai division for 11-13 year olds, we were able to finish 1st and 3rd overall, with Michael Carleo finishing 1st and Matthew Carleo finishing 3rd.  In the Matsumura Passai division for adults, we finished 1st and came within one vote of an
all-Maywood final round between Mason Senak and Andre Cabaero.  Mason eventually finished first and Andre lost by that one vote in the semi-final round.  In addition, Tyler Young and Alexandra Atanasoska represented the Maywood dojo very well in their first Shidokan competition.  The results were most gratifying because they are an indication that we are on the right track in living up to our responsibility to understand and implement Iha Sensei's teaching.

Speaking for all of the Maywood students who attended the National Training Seminar, we would like to express our sincere thanks for the friendship and respect so freely given by the people we met over the weekend.  We know that at times the behavior of the Maywood Dojo can be a little bit over-the-top and we appreciate the fact that we are fully accepted and valued in spite of our sometimes "unusual" behavior.

We entered this weekend with some nervous anticipation because of the pressure of testing and performing at the Wharton Center demonstration, but we returned with a feeling that we had just experienced one of the most wonderful weekends of our lives.

It was a special privilege to meet Iha Sensei's family and spend some time at his home with him and some of his other senior students.  We would especially like to thank Joe, Mark, Nakasone Sensei and all of Iha Sensei's other senior students for their hospitality.

2003 National Training Seminar (NTS)

The 2003 National Training Seminar was a rewarding and memorable event that marked a new beginning for the Maywood Dojo.  This event marked our acceptance as a Shibu Dojo, reporting directly to Iha Sensei.  In addition, four significant promotions were earned:

Candidate

Thomas Fitzpatrick 4th Dan
Joseph J. Pecoraro 4th Dan
Eddie Velazquez 4th Dan
David Senak 7th Dan

Two highlights were new to the National Training Seminar this year.  The first Kata Tournament for children was held on Saturday.  In addition, a demonstration was performed by the children at the Sunday celebration banquet.

The demonstration which was created and directed by Sensei Troy McGilchrist and Laura Chartier was described by many people as a highlight of the weekend.  The kids demonstrated many of the qualities we look for in our students.  They displayed knowledge of ShidoKan Karate, the spirit of cooperation, friendship and the ability to perform under pressure.  They were extremely well received by the audience.

The tournament featured some very competitive and excellent kata.  We were gratified to have our three competitors all place in the tournament.  In the children's tournament Michael Carleo, in a very close decision, won a 3rd place
trophy.  Jessica Scarpa was the first place winner in her children's event.  In the adult event, Mason Senak achieved "Excellent Results" which corresponds to the semi-final round.

Speaking for all of the attendees from Maywood, we would like to express our gratitude for the friendship and cooperation that was freely given to us by our hosts.  We are all looking forward to the next National Training Seminar.
